After various jobs including US Bank and Pizza Hut, Steve worked for the Portland cable companies; Rogers through Comcast, briefly for United Airlines and then retired after more than 10 years working at the Nike Employee Store/Warehouse in Beaverton. He served as an assistant girl's rowing coach at Atlantic City High School in 1994 and 1995. When he was 7 his mother passed away and his father Ray married Margie a year later who was one of his previous foster mothers, and moved to Summerfield, Florida where they eventually had two sons and a daughter of whom he was the eldest.

After graduating high school, Rick enlisted in the Air Force at 17. He attended Centennial High School and graduated from Gresham Union High School in 1973.
